ABOUT QUEEN OF PEACE CEMETERY:

The Queen of Peace Cemetery project consisted of the construction of a twelve-building cemetery campus in Old Westbury, New York. The campus included a large chapel, ten mausoleum buildings and an administration building.

PROJECT DETAILS:

This project included a wide cross section of roof systems covering the installation of 26,600 square feet of roofing along with the fabrication and installation of extensive custom sheet metal flashing and gutters. The systems included Carlisle TPO single ply flat roofing, Iron Stone porcelain slate roofing, New Castle Metals standing seam roof system as well as several thousand linear feet of custom sheet metal flashing, coping, and gutters.

The chapel construction designs included turn-of-the-century style building components: slate, custom metal wall flashing, and limestone masonry walls. The cooperation between Roof Services of NY, the mason and the carpenter required extensive coordination, in addition to the expertise required to install these classic building systems.

The chapel has an exposed wood cathedral ceiling which created challenges installing more than six inches of insulation and roof venting without any exposed fasteners visible from the interior. This impacted the integration of the slate roof and insulation with the masonry and carpentry.

One of the most challenging components of the chapel was the fabrication and installation of the custom sheet metal flashing systems. These components needed to be properly integrated with the walls and framing, watertight, and aesthetically pleasing.

The ten mausoleums were roofed with state-of-the-art, fleeced-back TPO roof systems. These highly reflective systems were installed on all flat roofs, compliant with the design criteria as well as the manufacturer’s requirements. In addition, there were four roof structures with Kynar-coated standing seam roof systems. These structures were designed to provide weather protection to visitors.

To the rear of the campus, stands a wood-framed administration building with a 7,000 square foot, steep sloped, shingle roof that drains into a metal gutter system.
